Prof. Dr. med. Christoph Arens, born in 1966, studied human medicine at the Justus Liebig University of Gießen from 1987-1993 and completed his practical year at the Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, USA. During his studies, he was awarded a scholarship by the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung. After his state examination, Prof. Arens worked as a research assistant at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery at the University Hospital of Giessen. His doctorate followed in 1996. In 1998, he completed his specialist training in ear, nose and throat medicine, head and neck surgery and one year later, he was awarded the additional qualification of chiropractor. In the same year, Christoph Arens was appointed senior physician at the University Clinic for ENT medicine, head and neck surgery Giessen. In 2005, he received the recognition of the Facultative Further Education for Special ENT Surgery. In the same year, he habilitated with the topic "The importance of autofluorescence in the early diagnosis of laryngeal carcinoma". From 2006 until his appointment to the University of Magdeburg, he worked as a senior consultant at the ENT Clinic of the University Hospital Gießen and Marburg at the Gießen site. In recent years, he gained additional qualifications such as Drug-Only Tumor Therapy, the additional qualification in Plastic Surgery and became a seminar leader at DEGUM in the head and neck area. In 2007-2008, Prof. Arens completed a contact study in health economics at the European Business School in Östrich-Winkel with the certificate Health Economist (EBS). In April of this year, he was appointed Associate Professor at the Justus Liebig University in Gießen and in May, he was offered the W3 Professorship for Ear, Nose and Throat Medicine at the Otto von Guericke University in Magdeburg.

In addition to many years of comprehensive experience in the entire spectrum of ENT diseases, Prof. Arens has specialised in the diagnosis and treatment of laryngeal diseases as well as tumors of the upper air and digestive tract in his clinical work.

The research focus of Prof. Arens is directed towards investigations in the diagnosis of laryngeal carcinoma and its precursors as well as the development and application of endoscopic imaging techniques. In 2004, he received an award from the European Laryngological Society for his work on autofluorescence in the larynx.
