Determination of sex and age using the classification model of vocal fold vessels
This is a prospective, randomized controlled study to evaluate a vocal fold vessel classification model. A further question concerns the validity of larynxendoscopic procedures. White light images of vocal folds and images taken by narrow band imaging are compared.

Diagnosis of dysphonia using voice analysis
With the help of neural networks or discriminant analyses, laryngeal diseases are to be analyzed on the basis of their specific sound pattern. Within the framework of the study, specific characteristics for the diseases will be worked out. This should enable an acoustic diagnosis in the long term.

Endoscopic imaging of dysplasias and carcinomas in the upper aerodigestive tract
Within the scope of the study, endoscopic imaging techniques (autofluorescence, optical coherence tomography and high-frequency ultrasound) will be investigated in their value in diagnosis and therapy of carcinomas and their precursors in the upper aerodigestive tract.

Development of new endoscopes for minimally invasive surgery in diseases of the upper aerodigestive tract

By developing new chips, the resolution of endoscopes is increasingly improved and the generated image is more detailed. As a result, even very small changes can be detected early on. In order to take advantage of this technique for the surgical treatment of laryngeal lesions, special laryngoscopes for endoscopic surgery are to be developed. This will allow the surgeon to treat laryngeal lesions precisely without a microscope in conjuntion with the aid of endoscopic imaging techniques.

Development and evaluation of an optical method to quantify vascular changes of the vocal folds
The first part of the study includes the development and pre-testing of an optical method for the quantification of vascular changes of the vocal folds. In the second part, the procedure will be evaluated using various larynxendoscopic methods (white light and NBI).

Evaluation of a classification model of vocal fold vascular changes
This is a prospective, randomized controlled study to evaluate a vocal fold vessel classification model. A further question concerns the validity of larynxendoscopic procedures. White light images of vocal folds and images taken by narrow band imaging are compared.

Flexible posterior rhinoscopy

Until now, flexible rhinoscopy from anterior has been the standard in ENT medical diagnostics. However, experience with improved flexible endoscopes shows on the one hand an increased compliance of patients for posterior examination and on the other hand a better assessability of rhinopathological processes. The aim of the study is a prospective evaluation of flexible posterior rhinoscopy with regard to feasibility, patient satisfaction and diagnostic significance.

Correlation with clinical and functional parameters in patients with recurrent polyposis nasi, bronchial asthma and analgesic intolerance

Expression of COX -1 and COX - 2 and 5-LOX in nasal polyps and bronchial mucosa in patients with recurrent polyposis nasi, bronchial asthma and analgesic intolerancec correlation with clinical and functional parameters.  Hypothesis: The expression of cyclooxygenases 1 and 2 and of 5-LOX in nasal polyps and bronchial mucosa differs between analgesic intolerant and analgesic tolerant patients and is predictive for the clinical course and the response to adaptive deactivation (This study is performed in collaboration with the Department of Pneumology, Chief Physician Prof. Dr. Schreiber).

Larynx endoscopic procedures compared to the detection of precancerous and cancerous lesions of the vocal folds

For the detection of precancerous and cancerous changes of the vocal folds, white light endoscopy is a standard part of the ENT medical examination. As modern procedures, both autofluorescence and narrow band imaging offer the possibility of additional examination tools for a more precise assessment of the extent of the changes. The aim of the present study is an assertion on the specificity and sensitivity of all three procedures in comparison to the gold standard histology. It is a randomized controlled prospective study. Patients undergoing phonosurgical surgery or biopsy as part of microlaryngoscopy will be examined.

Measurement of patient satisfaction of patients operated on one or two times with bilateral Reinke edema
Using various questionnaires, patients with bilateral Reinke's edema who underwent surgery once are compared to patients with bilateral Reinke's edema who underwent surgery twice.

Multicenter observational study to evaluate the diagnostic value of sonography in patients with chronic rhinosinusitisIn the context of a prospective application observation the following questions are to be worked on:

  • Detection of mucosal swelling or secretions in the maxillary and/or frontal sinus using A- and B-mode sonography
  • Comparison of the ultrasound findings with the results of the CT
  • Comparison of the sonographic and CT findings with the mucosal changes found intraoperatively in the NNH
  • Determination of the sensitivity, specificity and diagnostic accuracy of the individual examination methods.

Retro - and prospective examination of the results after glottis reconstruction with septum cartilage implantation in vocal fold scars
Objective: To demonstrate the effectiveness of laryngeal reconstruction by nasal cartilage implantation in patients with vocal fold scars after chorectomy (total and partial), blunt trauma, inflammation, burns, etc.

Importance of chiropractic therapy in the treatment of postoperative pain during tonsillectomy
In the prospective randomized study, patients with postoperative unilateral oropharyngeal pain will be evaluated with respect to segmental hypomobility of the upper cervicals. The effect of manual therapy on pain intensity will be evaluated.

Effectiveness of permanent endoscopic treatment of bilateral vocal cord paralysis (BVCP) in adductionThe aim of this multicenter study is to evaluate long-term endoscopic treatments of bilateral vocal cord paralysis. As a subproject, the value of glottis-expanding surgery is being evaluated using functional tests and questionnaires (e.g. laryngeal EMG, voice field measurement, 6-minute-roll test, lung function measurement, voice handycap index).

Determination of biomechanical properties of AFM of the Os temporal
The production of anatomical facsimile models by means of stereolithography enables the ear surgeon to provide surgical models. The biomechanical properties are relevant in order to achieve the same haptic properties here as on the ear bone. The determination of the biomechanical properties of these facsimile models in comparison to the anatomical preparation is the content of the project.

Development of a segment for the production of AFM of the Os temporal
High-resolution image data are required for the production of anatomical facsimile models of the human petrous bone. The transformation of this high-resolution CT data into machine-readable data for the stereolithography system is called segmentation process. The development of such a segmentation program together with the company Dornheim is the content of this project.

"Saxony-Anhalt listens to its children" - A project for the registration, inclusion and integration of hearing impaired children as a response to the demographic change in Saxony-Anhalt
Safe and comprehensive registration of children with hearing disorders already in the neonatal period (training of newborn screening personnel in the maternity hospitals of Saxony-Anhalt) as well as implementation of hearing-oriented early intervention for the affected children and implementation of a training plan for early intervention personnel

Stereolithographic model production of petrous bone facsimiles for surgical training
The availability of human temporal bone preparations for surgical training is significantly limited under current legal conditions. For this reason, a technical solution to the problem is to be found in the form of facsimiles of the temporal bone for surgical training. This requires extensive technical development, which will be undertaken within the framework of this project.

Study on musicality in children with auditory processing and perception disorders
In recent years, children with auditory processing and perception disorders have clearly become the focus of attention in phoniatric-pediatric audiological diagnostics and therapy. However, the examination of musicality in children with such communication disorders is not reliably clarified. The present study is intended to provide basic data for this purpose.

Complications and healing process after provox prosthesis insertion after laryngectomy

For the treatment of advanced laryngectomies or hypopharyngeal carcinomas, a laryngectomy is a possible treatment option. In order to achieve voice rehabilitation, the insertion of esophago-tracheal voice prostheses is one option. This rehabilitation measure holds the possibility of surgical complications. In order to achieve an optimized course of therapy and a better control of complications, these options will be presented in this project.

Newborn Hearing Screening and Tracking Saxony-Anhalt (project together with the Malformation Monitoring Saxony-Anhalt)

Since 01.01.2009, the universal newborn hearing screening was introduced in Germany. However, there is no uniform legislation on the follow-up examination of abnormal hearing findings. Without this so-called tracking, however, the screening examinations do not lead to a timely diagnosis of hearing loss. In Saxony-Anhalt, a tracking system has been established in cooperation with the Metabolic Monitoring and Malformation Monitoring Department. The project deals with the evaluation of data according to the children's guideline
